There are multiple steps involved in becoming a licensed driver in MN and some of these differ for homeschooled students. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.revisor.mn.gov\/rules\/7411.0540\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">See Minnesota Statute<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>For homeschooled children the classroom education can be carried out at home with the parent<\/li>\n<li>No more than three hours per day.<\/li>\n<li>You DO NOT need to pay for this or obtain a certificate (you can but it\u2019s not necessary).<!-- \/wp:list-item --><!-- wp:list-item --><\/li>\n<li>You must use <a href=\"https:\/\/dps.mn.gov\/...\/Documents\/HomeSchoolMaterials.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">approved resources<\/a>. (<em>The approved resource list from the DPS is out of date and several of the links do not work so I have added an updated version\u00a0<\/em><a style=\"background-color: #f3f5f8;\" href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/spreadsheets\/d\/1n7_vN4X_lPZWI4mUgmXqXpfpeGTl_IkyV3cj-M-vbjE\/edit?usp=sharing\"><em>here<\/em><\/a><em>.)<\/em><!-- \/wp:list-item --><!-- wp:list-item --><\/li>\n<li>You must sign an <a href=\"https:\/\/dps.mn.gov\/...\/Documents\/HomeSchoolAffidavit.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">affidavit<\/a> upon completion and send this to: <em>Submit by mail: <\/em>Driver and Vehicle Services, 445 Minnesota Street, Suite 176, St. Paul, Minnesota 55101 or <em>Submit by email: <\/em>driver.education@state.mn.us or <em>Submit by fax: <\/em>651-296-5316.<!-- \/wp:list-item --><!-- wp:list-item --><\/li>\n<li>If you decide to pay for the driver&#8217;s ed. materials you can claim for them using your non-public funds.<\/li>\n<li>At child age of 15, parents sign and send in the parent affidavit and receive a proof-of-classroom completion document.<\/li>\n<li><!-- \/wp:list-item --><!-- wp:list-item -->Present this document to the behind-the-wheel instruction provider to obtain a Certificate of Enrollment (blue card).<\/li>\n<li>Present \u201cblue card\u201d, birth certificate and \/ or passport, and social security card to the DMV test center (or <a href=\"https:\/\/onlineservices.dps.mn.gov\/EServices\/_\/#3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">schedule an appointment<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li>Take vision screening and permit test. If you fail, you need to book a new one. If you pass, you receive your provisional license and can now drive alone! <a href=\"https:\/\/dps.mn.gov\/blog\/Pages\/20200622-class-d-road-test-what-to-expect-what-to-bring.aspx?fbclid=IwZXh0bgNhZW0CMTEAAR2Mcl2PdpIiSgE1rL3gcnpnd5GE-LZbArt1Tvlu2gW8XhZfYR63bBVJt1Q_aem_Aa5rOorbDhmGnu6nWXm_F8iRokQPlStct6NM4GC3YknjSdePYjM5k_wkHd1dYElUMPrGq8005r0z1uoBAM9pvh6u\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>What to expect and what to bring<\/em><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-size: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-size ); font-style: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-style ); font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); letter-spacing: var( --e-global-typography-text-letter-spacing ); text-transform: var( --e-global-typography-text-text-transform ); text-align: var(--text-align); background-color: var( --e-global-color-secondary );\">The skills test covers the following areas in addition to general safe and defensive driving:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul style=\"font-size: 16px;\">\n<li style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Parallel parking: Be sure to actually turn your head and look behind you, instead of just using your rearview mirrors.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Backing: You must back up for about 100 feet in a straight line and do so smoothly. Again, remember to actually turn and look. You will get points off if you don&#8217;t.<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Stopping at a line and intersections: Be sure to stop at least 2 feet in front of the line (you should be able to see it).
